WHAT WE WEAR,
WHO WE ARE
This sculpture, made of painted ceramics, is studies two everyday objects: a pair of underwear and a face mask.
The pair of underwear and the mask are meant to allude to the functionality yet personal choice that comes with wearing the garment. Created during a time of tense political climate, wearing a face mask or lack thereof began to become a statement on a person’s political social views at large. In a similar way, underwear has been a consistent image of provocation and sexualization across cultures. By juxtaposing the underwear and the mask, I hoped to shed light upon the way that we engage with social obligation and personal choice. Both objects require a choice, and the use of both objects demonstrate a person’s identity to the world. While not wearing underwear is not as much of a literal choice, the object is entirely symbolic for how we engage with sexuality, romance, privacy, and bodily freedom.
